About
In New York City in April 1926, the American genius Martha Graham was joined onstage by three supporting dancers, and the Martha Graham Dance Company was born. The Company, now the oldest in the nation, celebrates the phenomenal milestone of its 100th season with six unmissable performances. Three of Graham's greatest masterworks, Night Journey (1947), Chronicle (1936; whose rare revival is commissioned by City Center) and Appalachian Spring (1944), each with iconic stage designs by sculptor Isamu Noguchi, are joined by the joyous Diversion of Angels (1948). These celebrated mid-century scores created for Graham are performed live by the Mannes Orchestra with conductor David Hayes. The program features stunning new works by Jamar Roberts and Baye & Asa, plus a special centennial commission set to newly discovered music by Leonard Bernstein arranged by composer Christopher Rountree, with choreography by Hope Boykin.
