About
Matthew Gasda broke theatre (and downtown Internet) with his underground, living room plays Dimes Square (2022) and Afters (2023). The New York Times declared his downtown trilogy an “underground hit” and Vulture named Gasda “Dramatist of the Scene.” The trilogy served as the launching pad for Gasda’s cult theatre-cum-afters spot the Brooklyn Center of Theatre Research. Now, Dimes Square is dead, and Matthew Gasda is moving his theatre company to Manhattan. Rechristened the Center for Theatre for Research, the company is about to stage the conclusion to Gasda’s downtown trilogy: The Last Days of Downtown. Twenty-seven actors. Eight scenes. One apartment. One week. The Last Days of Downtown is an overlapping, funny, at-times knowingly cringe depiction of the death of the downtown scene. Everyone’s an artist. Everyone has a dream. And everyone’s doing lines as their lines are overlapping while their dreams crash around them.
